Christmas Day this year saw the sky give us here in Minnesota an additional present. The Sun was partially eclipsed by the Moon around 11:00am local time. I managed to lose my Baader solar filter material that I had planned to use to make a solar filter for my telescope so I was stuck with using the free glasses given out in Astronomy magazine.

I used the glasses to view the eclipse naked eye. I also was able to use the glasses as a filter in front of my 35mm and video cameras. I took some shots with the camera and filmed some video with the video camera. I am pleased with the results, especially the video camera footage. Below is the best picture from the 35mm camera shots.

This was my first solar eclipse and I really enjoyed it. I hope to get some more filter material and construct the solar filter. It would be fun to be able to observe the  sun during the day. It should make for some interesting pictures too.
